Uses of Zopiclone
Zopiclone is prescribed for the short-term treatment of insomnia including:
Difficulties falling asleep
Transient, situational, or chronic insomnia
Insomnia secondary to psychiatric disturbances
How does it work?
Zopiclone is a central nervous system (CNS) depressant that helps you get to sleep faster and sleep through the night. It is a type of non-benzodiazepine hypnotic drug that acts in the brain to fall asleep.
Zopiclone works by increasing the activity of GABA in the brain. GABA is a natural body chemical that sends messages between nerve cells. GABA acts as a natural “nerve-calming” agent. It is involved in reducing anxiety, inducing sleepiness, and relaxing the muscles. It helps decreases the time it takes to fall asleep and the number of times you wake up in the night. It also increases the total amount of time you spent sleeping.
How much Zopiclone to take?
Zopiclone takes around 1 to 2 hours to work and it is usually prescribed for just 2 to 4 weeks.
For the treatment of insomnia:
Adults: Take 5 mg (women) or 5 to 10 mg (men) per day before bedtime. Your doctor may increase your dose as needed. The maximum dose is 10 mg a day.
Older adults: Take 5 mg a day before bedtime
The dose for patients with kidney, liver, and the respiratory problem is 3.75 mg a day. The treatment duration of transient insomnia is two to five days and two to three weeks for short-term insomnia.
Swallow the tablet whole. Do not break, suck, or chew the tablet. Do not increase your dose or take it for longer than the required duration of the treatment without informing your doctor.
